Darsonalization is a therapeutic treatment using pulsed alternating sinusoidal currents of high frequency (100–450, usually 110 kHz), high voltage (10–20 kV), and low current (0.02 mA, with a range of up to 10–15 mA). The darsonval device is a generator of high-frequency, high-voltage pulsed currents. Local darsonvalization utilizes glass electrodes of various shapes filled with rarefied air or an inert gas. The induced biochemical processes in cells and tissues are based on electrically active elements (ions, electrons, and dipoles of protein-colloidal structures), which cause alternating potentials and ionic polarization (oscillatory action).

When pulses are applied (approximately 50 times per second), a silent or sparking discharge occurs between the electrode and the skin, producing an irritating or cauterizing effect.
